Dog swallows Wii Remote, sickness quickly fades

Unbeknownst to owners the Becknell family, the dog was taken to the local veterinarian after the canine began coughing up blood. X-rays showed a remote-like mass in the dog's stomach to which the family agreed must have been the an old TV remote. In fact, it was a Wii Remote.

"The Vet started massaging the dogs belly and it just came flying out of the dog," said owner Marie Becknell. "I knew what it was right away by the color and shape of it -- it was my son's video game remote. The dog had swallowed the boy's Nintendo Wii controller."

While the dog was fine, the Wiimote didn't fair so well -- it had to be tossed. As punishment the boy was out two weeks allowance for the cost to replace the controller said Mrs. Beknell.

Plea for tougher knife controls

The father of a schoolboy who was stabbed to death at a bus stop has called for tighter restrictions on knives in the wake of his son's death.

Odwayne Barnes, 16, was injured in a fatal attack outside Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham on 5 March.

Damien Belle, 18, of Heathway, Shard End, admitted his murder at the start of the trial.

Nathaniel Darby, 20, of Wyrley Way, Erdington and Michel Hayles, 17, of Amberley Grove, Aston, were cleared of murder but were found guilty of manslaughter after a two-week trial.

One incident takes a life and it causes so much misery.

Odwayne, a promising footballer, died in hospital several days after the attack.

Wayne Barnes, 42, Odwayne's father, said he did not get a chance to talk to his son as he never regained consciousness.

'Disgusting crime'

"His dream was to be a professional footballer, because he was training for the Blues' (Birmingham City's) under-16s," he said.

The devastated father said he was struggling to come to terms with his loss and wished he could warn his son away from gangs.

"Every time I look at pictures in the house and look at him on the wall, it's more grief.

"I would like to tell him that don't pay, gangs don't pay. Best to get a job or learn some trade or something.

"I would like to see them put more restrictions on knives falling in the wrong hands of kids."

'Tougher regulations'

The court heard that during police interviews Hayles claimed to be a member of a gang called the "Slash Crew" or "Slash for Money Crew".

He said he had previously fallen out with Odwayne, who was a member of a rival gang called "Bang Bang".

Acting Det Ch Insp Paul Ford of West Midlands Police echoed Mr Barnes' plea and said he believed tougher knife regulations were needed.

"My heart goes out to Odwayne's family and anyone else who's been caught up in this terrible and disgusting crime.

"My own personal view is I would welcome a tightening of restrictions, certainly on carrying knives.

"One incident takes a life and it causes so much misery for all those involved, including the offenders' families."

Mr Ford said Darby, Belle and Hayles had bought a number of knives from premises in the city centre before the attack.

"Their (the defendants) behaviour would show that they were very intent on detaining Odwayne and causing him harm.

"It's a real tragedy for everyone involved."

The police officer said the growing number of gangs was worrying.

The city's gang culture was highlighted with the shooting and killing of Letisha Shakespeare, 17 and Charlene Ellis, 18 in January 2003, believed to be innocent bystanders caught up in an attack between rival gangs.

But he said Birmingham was a safe city and that there had only been one murder in the city centre during the last 12 months.

"It clearly causes us a great deal of concern within the local community in terms of gang culture.

"A lot of young people say they belong to gangs but in reality they don't, it's a bit of a street cred issue for them.

"But wider society has got a responsibility for diverting young people from gang activity."

'Nail bomb' explosion near school

A nail bomb has exploded underneath a car, believed to belong to a teacher, near a boys' school in Liverpool.

The blast happened outside St Edwards College, in Sandfield Park, West Derby - an independent Catholic boys school.

Merseyside Police has confirmed that officers are investigating a security alert at the school, which happened at about 1450 BST.

A spokeswoman confirmed that some kind of explosive device was involved in the incident on Friday.

THREE company bosses were held by police as part of an operation targeting extortion rackets and rogue security firms.

Officers from Operation Seahog launched eight raids across Merseyside yesterday as part of the on-going crackdown.

They went to addresses in Aigburth, Litherland, Crosby, Waterloo, Norris Green and Fazakerley and seized a large amount of cash and a sizeable number of documents.

The three men arrested, aged between 32 and 46, were picked up on suspicion of breaching the Private Security Industry Act.

They were quizzed by detectives throughout the day yesterday, accused of employing and deploying unlicensed staff.

In the last year, officers and representatives from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) have carried out visits to 620 construction sites and executed 56 warrants.

A total of 51 private security companies have been investigated and 138 people have been convicted of working without an SIA licence.

Two men, Andrew Moore and Craig Moore, from Halsbury Road, Kensington and Winslow Street, Walton, have also been found guilty of blackmail offences and are due to be sentenced at Liverpool crown court next month.

Chief Inspector Mark Harrison, of Merseyside Police, said: “We won’t stand back and let security firms, which aren’t being run legitimately, get a foothold in Merseyside.

“And those security firms which fail to comply with the Private Security Industry Act will be attacked from all angles.”

ECHO reveals one in five children have suffered

THE government has announced a new crackdown on cyber bullies – just months after the ECHO exposed how the problem had doubled in Liverpool’s schools.

Today city education chiefs welcomed the latest drive and warned culprits would be treated as heavily as “those who punch someone at the back of the bike sheds.”

In July, the ECHO revealed how bullies had posted pictures online of schoolgirls and labelled them with sexually explicit insults, potentially leaving them vulnerable to paedophiles.

Our investigation also found at least one in five children has suffered at the hands of bullies who were now setting up websites with pictures and nasty jibes about their victims.

Today the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched online campaign Laugh At It And You’re A Part Of It which will include advice and short films for schools.

It comes on the back of DCSF research which suggests up to 34% of 12 to 15-year-olds had suffered cyber-bullying.

It will include victims being given a say on punishments and culprits warned about the impact of malicious texts or emails.

An ECHO probe revealed how Robyn Hinxman was pulled out of Holly Lodge school after enduring a two-year hate campaign.

The school said it did everything it could but she was transferred to nearby Broughton Hall by her mum Maxine Kuliev who revealed her daughter, now 13, suffered a barrage of taunts and text message threats.

Today Ms Kuliev, of Winstone Road, Huyton welcomed the new crackdown.

She said: “After what my daughter went through any advice given to schools has to be a benefit.”

Everton fans fury at ticket fiasco

HUNDREDS of angry Everton fans missed the start of last night’s Uefa cup match because of a ticket blunder.

Around 2,000 people, whose tickets had not arrived in the post in time, had to queue outside Goodison Park.

Kick-off was delayed for half an hour but many were still locked out 20 minutes into the first half of the game in the first-leg tie against Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv.

Police on horseback monitored the streams of supporters waiting to collect replacement pre-paid tickets.

Today Everton FC blamed Royal Mail for the delays.

But fans branded the club’s handling of the situation “shambolic”.

Paul O’Connor, 26, who travelled from Cumbria to watch the game, said: “When my ticket didn’t turn up on Wednesday I was told by the club to pick it up at the box office tonight but have been waiting two hours. It is just shambolic and I will be expecting a refund.”

Other disgruntled supporters included Dave Gibbons, 31, from St Helens. He had missed 15 minutes of the first half when he said: “I have been waiting over an hour. I don’t see why we just couldn’t show proof of purchase to get in.”

Today Everton FC said the delays were “regrettable but unavoidable.”

Spokesman Ian Ross said: “A batch of match tickets were dispatched from Goodison Park in Monday’s first-class post.

“Clearly, they should have arrived the following morning but some went astray.

“This resulted in hundreds of supporters turning up at the stadium this evening without tickets and, in order to comply with safety regulations and after taking advice from Merseyside police, we had no option but to issue duplicate tickets.

“We had to be absolutely certain that everyone got into the stadium safely.”

The club said it would now be meeting Royal Mail officials to find out what went wrong.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We are liaising with Everton and investigating this matter.

“We cannot track these tickets because they were normal first class delivery instead of special delivery.”

Weather can't spoil party as QE2 makes last visit to Liverpool

THE WORLD’S greatest liner, the QE2, made an emotional return to the Mersey today.

The ship arrived in the river at dawn as part of today’s celebrations to open Liverpool’s new cruise terminal.

It is likely to be her final visit to Liverpool before being turned into a floating hotel in 2009.

Hundreds of people on both sides of the Mersey braved driving rain to welcome the graceful 70,300 tonne liner.

At around 6.20am, the outline of her giant bow emerged from the mist and drizzle.

Cameras flashed on shore and aboard ship as she made her slow progress to her berth.

By 7am she had docked at the city’s new cruise liner terminal, her 963ft length taking up almost the whole of the stage.

People who had turned out with videocameras and tripods were able to catch a glimpse of the world’s most famous ocean liner coming to life.

Through the windows, they could make out waiters in white shirts setting out breakfast in one of the dining rooms as cabin lights came on.

A few dozen passengers had come out on deck to wave at crowds on both sides of the Mersey, one unfurling a Union Jack.

The QE2 is calling at Liverpool for the first time since 2005 on a round-Britain cruise to celebrate her 40th anniversary.

People who turned out all said it had been worth the rainy early start to see the liner.

George Haughton, 68, from Walton said: “I’ve never seen her before - she’s such a graceful ship.

“She’s not like the ones now, that just look like floating hotels. She’s a proper ship, absolutely superb. It’s a shame there aren’t more young people out here to see her.”

Margaret James, 59, from Childwall said: “There were people driving along Egremont to have a look at it this morning - it’s just amazing to see it. One of our friends’ fathers used to work as a printer on it - lots of people have a connection to it somehow.”

Down in the hull, a flag had been unfurled which read “Happy 40th birthday from crew and passengers to you.”

The Duke of Kent was opening the new terminal this morning and spectacular firework display is being held at 10.45pm.

The QE2 has arrived on Merseyside as part of the official opening of Liverpool's £19m cruise liner terminal.

Thousands watched as the liner sailed into the River Mersey on Friday.

The Duke of Kent is leading the celebrations which coincide with the 40th birthday of the liner and will unveil a commemorative plaque later.

A concert marking the anniversary will take place at the Anglican Cathedral with soprano Lesley Garrett and tenor Nicky Spence.

Carol Marlow, president and managing director of Cunard Line, said: "Cunard was founded in Liverpool in 1839 and the city was home to our head office for nearly 130 years so it's always nice to come back home."

The ship is scheduled to berth permanently at a pier at the Palm Jumeirah development in Dubai in 2009.

The plan is to turn the 963ft (294m) long, 105ft (32m) wide liner into a floating hotel.

She's almost unrecognizable with her dark hair and hippie type outfit, but I think she looks a little better these days, however, it could be only because she hasn't been in the news too much lately. Rafael Benitez has hit back at Sam Allardyce after his ludicrous claims that the Liverpool manager is lucky to still have a job.
Speaking in Zoo Magazine, the Newcastle boss insisted Benitez would have lost his job by now for his failure to win the Premier League had he not guided the Reds to two Champions League finals.

But Benitez has hit back and told Allardyce to mind his own business and concentrate on his own club.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I want to say two things. Firstly, I think he should be more worried about his own business because he must have more problems than to waste time talking about other managers.

"Secondly, has he forgotten Liverpool winning the Super Cup, FA Cup and Champions League as well as reaching another Champions League final, a Carling Cup final and twice finishing third in the Premier League? Maybe he doesn't have a great memory."

QE2 gets set for her last visit

THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock to the waterfront tomorrow for what could be the QE2’s final visit to Liverpool.

The most famous ship in the world docks at the city’s new cruise liner terminal between 7-8am to take part in a day-long extravaganza ending with a spectacular fireworks display.

The QE2, launched by the Queen 40 years ago, will berth for a final time in Dubai in 2009 when she will become a floating hotel.

Tomorrow is her last planned visit to Liverpool, although Cunard say there is a possibility she may make another brief stop-off between now and her final trip to the Middle East.

Thousands of maritime enthusiasts are expected at the Mersey waterfront in Liverpool and Wirral to catch a glimpse of the 70,300-tonne vessel.

A civic party headed by the Duke of Kent and culture minister Margaret Hodge will also welcome the QE2 to Princes Dock, before a gala concert at Liverpool cathedral for guests and passengers.

Soprano Lesley Garrett, tenor Nicky Spence, author and QE2 expert Carol Thatcher and frequent passenger Sir Jimmy Savile will all attend.

The fireworks display takes place at 10.45pmand the QE2 leaves the Mersey at 3am.

All in all, the ship is likely to receive her most raucous reception since her first visit to Liverpool in 1990, when a million people are estimated to have turned out to see her.

City officials hope such a high-profile visitor will give the £19m terminal just the boost it needs to put Liverpool back on the world cruising map.

The arrival of the QE2, which has sailed the equivalent of 13 trips to the moon and back, is always a popular occasion in Liverpool.

Rachel Mulhearn, curator at the Maritime Museum, believes this has a lot to do with the longevity of the ship, which was even requisitioned as a troop carrier during the Falklands War.

She said: “I think the response in 1990 was so overwhelming because it had been a while since anyone had seen that size of vessel in the river. It was the first for a generation and couldn’t fail to make an impact.

“Many people remembered when Liverpool was bustling with ships, even though they might not be the massive liners of the early 20th century.

“Also, Liverpool was still very down at heel in 1990, so to get that attention from something so iconic was special.”

Liverpool’s cruise liner heyday was probably in the early 20th century, after emerging as a major port in the mid-19th century.

It greeted world-renowned passengers liners such as the Lusitania, which was eventually torpedoed by a German U-boat during World War I.

Ms Mulhearn said: “That was Liverpool’s golden age, when those wonderful liners came to the landing stage before trans-Atlantic voyages.

“A lot of the big ships started sailing out of Southampton post-World War I, but the cruise liner industry did continue.

“During the 1920s and 1930s, Cunard operated Mediterranean cruises, and firms like the Pacific Steam Navigation Company operated right through to the late 1950s to South America and the Caribbean.

“It declined because cruises went out of fashion with the introduction of cheap air flights. People found they could reach places quicker.

“The industry has come back slowly in the past 10 years or so, and I do not see any reason why, with the right tourism infrastructure, Liverpool cannot re-establish itself as a cruise destination for the future.”

As well as those who sailed on the QE2 as passengers, the ship became the workplace for many Merseysiders.

Ernie Ashley, 63, from Woolton, worked in the QE2’s catering department from 1968-71.

He said: “When I was on it, there were a lot of lads from Liverpool and Belfast, who all worked and drank together.

“At the time, it was just another job to us, but looking back, I have some good memories.”

LIVERPOOL council has won a cross-party coalition to tackle gun crime following the murder of Rhys Jones.

Council leader Warren Bradley will shortly meet Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and Conservative frontbenchers to agree to put more police on the streets and block the import of firearms.

The summit, which will also include Merseyside police chief Bernard Hogan-Howe and other chief constables, is likely to take place next month after the Labour and Tory party conferences.

Cllr Bradley told the Liberal Democrat conference: "The death of Rhys was a real wake-up call.

"People say he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"That is rubbish. He was in the right place kicking a football about. It is the criminals with guns who should not have been there."

He added: "We want to get agreement with all the parties, with the government, the police and the community, to share ideas and to take on the criminals.

"Chief constables and the community tell us we need more police officers on the streets and we need more funding and a shift in priorities to do that."

The conference called for:

New powers to allow the police and local authorities to safeguard the anonymity of witnesses who are afraid to testify.

A 24-hour border force incorporating immigration, customs and police at Liverpool and all other UK entry ports to beat gun-runners.

The shutting down of pubs and other places where gangs are known to congregate.

Rhys Jones' parents: Our darkest days are yet to come

THE heartbroken parents of Rhys Jones will face two traumatic days next week with their 20th wedding anniversary followed by what would have been their son’s 12th birthday.

Making another emotional appeal for help to catch their son’s killers, Stephen and Melanie Jones told how some of the darkest days since Rhys was murdered are yet to come.

The 11-year-old was murdered four weeks ago in Croxteth, when a teenage gunman shot him through the neck as he walked home from football practice.

Mr Jones, 44, said: “Next week will be a really traumatic week.

“It’s our 20-year wedding anniversary on Wednesday and Thursday is Rhys’s birthday, so it’s going to be really traumatic.

“We’re just keeping strong for each other but we need public support to bring this injustice to a close.”

Mrs Jones, 41, who found Rhys in a pool of blood in the Fir Tree pub car park, said: “Rhys wanted a new mobile phone for his birthday.

“We always went for a Chinese meal for his birthday, it was his favourite meal.

“I don’t know if I can go out next week.”

The couple spoke out four weeks to the day after their Everton-mad son was gunned down.

Reliving the horror of the last month, Mr Jones, a supermarket night shift manager, said: “Four weeks ago we were a normal happy family, with us, Rhys and his older brother Owen.

“All that changed on that Wednesday.

“There are people out there who know who has done it and I appeal for them to come forward.”

Det Supt Dave Kelly, the man leading the hunt for the gunman, said he felt there was no-one in the country who has not been affected by Rhys’s murder.

He said: “I take this opportunity to remind those involved that we are as determined as ever to bring them to justice for the sake of Rhys’s family.”

POLICE reiterated their appeal for two witnesses to come forward as they look to solve the case.

Det Supt Kelly said a man who phoned police at 11.10pm on Saturday August 25 had been “very brave” in giving information but pleaded with the mystery caller to come forward again.

He said: “I know, and he knows, that he possesses information that could be the key to bringing those responsible to justice.

He also appealed for a woman in a red car, seen driving down Fir Tree Drive North at 7.25pm on the night of the killing, August 22, to get in touch.

The appeal came as BBC TV crews recreated the shooting for Crimewatch. The show will be aired to millions of viewers next Wednesday.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has stunned the world of football by leaving Stamford Bridge by mutual consent.

The decision comes after the club held a crisis meeting to discuss the indifferent start to the new season.

Mourinho, 44, joined Chelsea in June 2004 and led them to the Premiership title in each of his first two seasons.

But his relationship with Blues owner Roman Abramovich grew increasingly troubled and he quit despite having three years left on his contract.

BBC Radio 5live football correspondent Jonathan Legard understands Mourinho texted senior players, including skipper John Terry, to tell them he was leaving.

Meanwhile, Peter Kenyon, the club's chief executive, Bruce Buck, the chairman, and Abramovich's key aide, Eugene Tenenbaum, were called to an emergency meeting at Stamford Bridge last night to discuss the emerging crisis.

A statement on the Chelsea website confirmed: "Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have agreed to part company today (Thursday) by mutual consent."

Many of Chelsea's staff and players had been enjoying a relaxing evening at a Fulham Broadway cinema last night as they watched a screening of "Blue Revolution" - a new documentary about the Abramovich years.

But senior players such as Terry and Frank Lampard were absent and the remainder, except a reluctant Shaun Wright-Phillips, refused to talk to the media.

Mourinho also attended the evening but ignored the waiting media and looked decidedly glum.

The Portuguese made a massive impact at Chelsea after joining them from Porto, whom he guided to Champions League glory in 2004.

Last season, the Blues finished runners-up to Manchester United but won both the FA Cup and Carling Cup, a trophy they had also collected in 2005.

Mourinho's achievements also saw him voted as Premiership manager of the year in 2005 and 2006.

However, the Champions League trophy eluded the club and this season's campaign started with Tuesday's shock 1-1 draw at home to Norwegian side Rosenborg in front of a crowd of just 24,973.

It was their third successive game without a win following a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa and a goalless draw with Blackburn in the Premier League.

Those results have left Chelsea fifth in the table - two points behind leaders Arsenal and with a visit to Manchester United to come on Sunday.

The BBC understands the impasse between Mourinho and Abramovich came to a head after their 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa earlier this month.

Mourinho has been at loggerheads with the Russian since their disagreement over the lack of funds to sign players during last January's transfer window.

Mourinho's reluctance to play Ukraine international Andriy Shevchenko, brought in by Abramovich at a cost of £31m, and the Russian billionaire's desire to bring in Grant from Portsmouth to work with the misfiring striker only served to heighten the tension.

Grant was recruited in the summer as director of football and Mourinho is understood to have simmered ever since.

Former Chelsea player Pat Nevin says that behind the scenes movements were key to Mourinho's departure.

"He's a very individual man and he thinks he should be the power at the club," Nevin told 5live.

"If you put someone of that ego, and I say that in a likeable way, in charge and then you tell him you're not quite in charge, then I think it was a recipe for disaster."

Radio 5live football correspondent Legard agreed Mourinho's relationship with Abramovich would break down at some point.

"It suited both parties that he went," said Legard. "They've had an uneasy relationship, to put it mildly.

"One: the board, Roman Abramovich and the directors were frustrated by the results this season and also the style of play. They wanted stylish football. They wanted football which appealed to the world and they weren't getting it.

Former England manager Graham Taylor believes the beginning of the end came when Michael Ballack and Shevchenko were brought in, reportedly against Mourinho's wishes.

Taylor told 5Live: "Once you take away the authority the manager has in signing players, you're on a slippery slope.

"What I would say about Mourinho is his record is with underachieving players and when Shevchenko and Ballack came in, it disturbed the balance.

"They've never looked as fluid and that's because the manager probably did not himself believe that is the way they should be playing."

Mourinho still had three years left on his contract, worth about £5m a year, after agreeing a new deal in May 2005.

At the time he signed that deal, he said: "My heart is with Chelsea and the fantastic group of players that I have but the vision of the owner and the board for the future of Chelsea is also one I want to be a part of.

"I cannot imagine another situation or another club where I could be happier. I am totally behind this project."

But the Chelsea board are thought to have become increasingly unhappy over the team's form at the beginning of the campaign.

Mourinho, who has reportedly been given a £10m pay-off by the Blues, will not be short of job offers.

Of the 185 games he was in charge of Chelsea, they won 124, drew 40 and lost 21, a record that includes a 60-match unbeaten run in Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge.

The statistics go some way towards justifying Mourinho's famous description of himself as "a special one", made during his first press conference as Chelsea boss.
